About the speaker:

Li Kelin, Wu Yuzhang Distinguished Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at Renmin University of China. Her main research areas include contemporary French philosophy and comparative Chinese-Western aesthetics. She is the author of the monograph Deleuze's Theater  of Philosophy (The Commercial Press, 2022) and has published dozens of articles in Chinese and international journals such as Social Sciences in China, Philosophical Research, Literary and Artistic Studies, and Yearbook for Eastern and Western Philosophy.

Abstract:

The concept of "Yi-shu" in contemporary Chinese academic and everyday discourse—its signifier (form and pronunciation) is rooted in the Chinese language, yet its core signified, as an independent aesthetic category in the modern sense of art, is deeply imprinted with the intellectual lineage of the West. When we think and speak through it, we are, in fact, perpetually situated within a historically constructed, asymmetric field of meaning. Therefore, inquiring "what is art" in the Chinese context carries a dual mission: it is both an engagement with the ongoing contemporary debates in the West and a conscious reflection on the historical process through which our own cultural framework was obscured and reconfigured. Moreover, it represents an essential path toward exploring an equal and creatively differentiated form of expression within global dialogue.
